We’re back again with cookie #6 in our “10 Cookies for Valentine’s Day” Series! My Valentines Sprinkle Stripe Cookies are SO DANG CUTE and I cannot wait to finally be sharing them with you today. With soft and sweet cut-out sugar cookie dough striped with red sanding sugar sprinkles, these darling treats will be a hit for your Valentine’s Day celebrations!

Labor of love

Yes, there are quite a few steps for these cookies, but don’t let that steer you away! You just need to plan ahead for a bit of chilling time :). It’s still faster than making a cake start to finish, haha. Basically, as a road map, we’re making one batch of dough, splitting it in two, pressing sprinkles into half of the dough, slicing the dough up, lining up the dough slices in stripes (sprinkle, regular dough, sprinkle, regular, etc), cut the hearts out, bake, and you’re all set!

Ingredients for the Valentines sprinkle striped cookies

Everything you already have, with maybe the exception of the red sanding sugar. You can use red, pink, purple, or anything you’d like to! I chose red this time, and my friend John did pink for his original version of this cookie style. Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. Unsalted Butter – leave it out at room temperature for a little bit to slightly soften.
  2. Sugar – granulated sugar
  3. Salt – to balance out the sweet.
  4. Vanilla – I love the Costco brand, but as long as it’s pure vanilla, you’ll be all set!
  5. Almond extract – I use the PK Elixir brand, but anything else will be great, too!
  6. Eggs – large
  7. Flour – all purpose.
  8. Red Sanding SugarI used this kind from Amazon.

How to make the stripes

This is where chilling and texture come into play – the dough needs to remain cold, so working quickly is key!

  • Make the dough according to the directions below for the Valentine’s Sprinkle Stripe Cookies.
  • Split the dough into 2 balls, and then roll each of them out separately on two sheets of parchment paper.
  • For one of the rolled out dough sheets, sprinkle on an even and generous layer of sprinkles, then use a rolling pin to roll the sprinkles into the dough. Chill both of the dough sheets.
  • Using a ruler and knife (or pizza cutter), slice lines into the dough.
  • Working quickly (if your dough is too warm, you need to place it back into the freezer at this point), remove a slice from the sprinkle dough and place it next to a slice of the un-sprinled dough Repeat until you have every other (stripes!)
  • Use a rolling pin to roll the striped dough into each other (making the stripes stick), then place it back into the freezer to chill (to firm).
  • Use a heart cookie cutter to make small hearts and place them onto a cookie sheet. (This set of heart cutters is great!)
  • Chill (yep, again) then bake!

Soft and sweet sugar cookies striped with red sanding sugar – perfect for Valentine's Day!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, left out at room temperature for 10 minutes
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 cups red sanding sugar (sugar sprinkles)

Instructions

  • In a bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream together the butter, sugar, and salt until light and fluffy.
  • Add in the eggs and vanilla and mix until thoroughly combined.
  • Slow the mixer to low, then add in the flour until combined, but don't overmix.
  • Split the dough in half (half will be the sprinkles and half will be plain, so hang tight) then place one half of the cookie dough on one sheet of parchment paper and the other on another sheet. Place another parchment sheet on top of both of the dough balls. Use a rolling pin to flatten out the dough to be about 1/8 inch thick (both the separate doughs).
For one half the dough, sprinkle on an even generous layer of red sanding sugar and use the rolling pin to roll the sprinkles into the dough.
  • Chill both of the dougsh for 20 minutes.
Use a ruler for even measuring (about 1/4 inch), and a pizza slicer (or knife) to make long 1/4 inch slices in the cookie dough. Make sure to slice both the sprinkle dough and the plain dough.
Carefully lift every other slice, and place in the opposite slice between each dough line – so you end up with every other line being a sprinkle line and a regular dough line right next to each other. If the dough is breaking, place it back in the freezer because it needs to be cold for this step!
When you have a stripe pattern, use a rolling pin to gently roll the striped lined dough pieces together (so the stripes stick to each other again).
Place the dough back into the freezer on a flat cookie sheet.
  • Use a small (2-3") cookie cutter to punch out hearts and place the hearts onto a cookie sheet lined with a sheet of parchment paper. Chill the dough in the freezer for 5 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, then bake the chilled cookies for 8-10 minutes. Cool the cookies on a wire rack and store in an airtight container.
