E.A.S.Y. Emphasis on easy, for sure. From all the four new cupcakes I’ve created this year for Halloween, I wanted one of them to be more on the simpler side of life. Because after all, sometimes ain’t nobody got time fo’ ‘dat. Amiright?

These darling little black cat cupcakes are less spooky and more fun for the creepy holiday. I love how they turned out, and can’t wait to try out this simple technique with different designs. The technique is super simple, and I can’t wait to share it with you!

To make these darling little bright cupcakes, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  1. First, start off with your favorite white cake recipe and tint it yellow. I love how the yellow almost looks like a moon behind the black cat! I used yellow cupcake liners, too, to further emphasize the yellow under the black cat.
  2. Next, I piped on an even layer of buttercream. Vanilla will do just fine – I used a circle tip and kept things pretty flat.
  3. To make things even more flat, I heated up my angled cake spatula, or offset icing spatula, with hot water. When you do this, you can spread everything super flat and create a perfect place for your cat shadow to go.
  4. I cut out a little black cat shape (you can find a ton online) and placed the cut-out outline right on the frosting.
  5. For the black shape, I added on black sugar sprinkles and pressed gently on them to make sure some stay in place. Gently peel back the paper and reveal your cute little fuzzy black cat shape!
Here’s a quick little video going over the process:

Hope you love these cute little black cat cupcakes as much as we did! Just a note – the black sugar tends to bleed onto the white buttercream if left for more than a couple days. I’d make these the day before, and you should be all set!

Happy haunting, my cake-loving friends, and I’m excited to see all your ghoulish creations this Halloween season. 🙂
