Valentine’s Day Hot Cocoa Bombs
Hot cocoa bombs are back, and this time they’re all dressed up for Valentine’s Day! With vibrant pinks, deep reds, and stunning whites, each cocoa bomb is filled with luscious chocolate, fluffy heart marshmallows, a truffle or two, and topped with sprinkles and cotton candy! These are just as fun to make as they are to watch melt in your mug of hot cocoa.
They were all the rage this past winter, but I feel like we could have just as fun with them for February! After all, it’s still pretty chilly out and we could still definitely classify it as “hot cocoa” weather out our door here in Utah. We haven’t had a lot of snow here in the valley, but the boys still come inside from playing while asking for a cup of hot cocoa to warm their cold fingers and satisfy their little sweet teeth (sweet tooth? tooths? eh, you get the idea).
I shared a pretty in-depth tutorial back in December on Instagram on how to make these, so if you’re looking for a video with me talking you through the entire process, you’ve come to the right place! To see that video, click here.
As for the Valentine’s Day version of my hot cocoa bombs, you’ve also come to the right place! I’ll share the same ideas, but with the celebration of lovers day all over each detail darling detail. 🙂
For those who are a little list about what the heck hot cocoa bombs are, they are these you see above! They are hollow chocolate spheres and are filled with hot cocoa mix and marshmallows. When you pour in hot water or hot milk, the chocolate shell melts and little marshmallows pop up to the top! They make fun gifts, and are a fun little goodie to make with the family, too.
Let’s get started on how to make them!
Here’s what you need:
EQUIPMENT
For the hot cocoa bombs, there’s a few pieces of equipment you’ll need:
Cocoa Bomb Mold: You’re going to need this (or something similar) hot cocoa bomb mold. They are giant spheres, and are a little smaller than a baseball. You want the cocoa bombs to be big enough to fit the goodies you’ll put inside of it, but also small enough to fit inside your hot cocoa mug. I love the silicone mold because you can easily move it around and pop out the semi circles.
I also used a variation this time with a heart mold. You can find it here:
Here’s what they look like:
Sauce/Saute pan: To connect the two half spheres together, you’ll need to melt the edges. In order to do that, you’ll need to place the sphere edges on a very warm pan. I used a regular saute pan (you’ll see it in the tutorial video).
Half Cookie Sheet: This will be where you place your molds on so that you can transfer them from counter to freezer.
Spoon or paintbrush: This will help you add the chocolate to your mold.
Drizzle bottle: This will help you drizzle the chocolate decor on top of the cocoa bombs.
Cupcake liners: These are an easy way to store your cake bombs without them rolling around the place.
Parchment paper: When you add on the drizzle, this helps keep your workspace clean underneath.
INGREDIENTS:
Chocolate: I used Sweet Tooth Fairy’s Melting Chocolate for my cocoa bombs. I chose a bag of white, pink, and red. For the light pink, I mixed a bit of the pink into the white. They melt really easily in the microwave, and they also taste really good! They are not coverture, so they do not need tempering. You just melt them, and then they’re good to go!
Hot Cocoa Mix: I just went with Stephens hot cocoa mix. You can always make your own from scratch, but for me, it’s super easy to just buy it from the store! 🙂 For my Christmas ones, I loved using peppermint and Christmas flavors like that. For these ones for Valentine’s Day, I went with the white chocolate and raspberry chocolate mixes. You will need enough mix for one mug per bomb (so mine was three tablespoons per bomb).
Marshmallows: I went with hart ones and regular ones for our Valentines Day cocoa bombs. The heart ones I found on Amazon, but you can also find them locally, hopefully!
Sprinkles and Decor: Each cocoa bomb can have it’s own personality! Add on hearts, sprinkles, cotton candy, anything!
Truffles or Chocolates: I know that adding more chocolate is a bit redundant, but I loved adding in little Dove chocolate hearts or Lindor truffles inside if there was room.
That’s it! Let’s dive into the process:
Heres how you make them:
STEP 1: In a medium glass bowl, melt 2-3 cups of chocolate melts in the microwave for 1 minute. Stir, then add another 30 seconds as needed until they are completely melted. With a spoon or paintbrush, add in a few tablespoons of melted chocolate to each half circle, then use the back of the spoon to pull the chocolate up the sides.
STEP 2: Freeze it for 5 minutes. Add more chocolate along the top edge/rims of each half circle. Freeze again, then carefully peel each half circle out of the mold. It’s okay if the edges aren’t perfect, you can fix them in the next step.
STEP 3: Heat up the pan to medium heat. It doesn’t need to be super hot, just enough to melt a tiny bit of the circle edges. Place the pan on a heat pad next to your working station. One by one, melt HALF of each sphere set and place with the round side on the sheet. So each sphere has to sides, and you’re only going to fix the flat edge on one of them. You’ll do the other half after you fill them. So to be clear, half the spheres have clean edges, and the other half don’t.
STEP 4: Fill each clean-edged half sphere with a scoop of cocoa powder, a couple marshmallows and any other goodies you want to sneak inside. Don’t overfill it or let it touch the edges, this will make it harder to add on the other half of the sphere.
STEP 5: Carefully melt the other half of the sphere (the unfinished edge one) and quickly place on top of the other half. Immediately use your finger to run around the edges to create a seal with the melted chocolate. Let cool.
STEP 6: Drizzle on the chocolate and immediately add on any toppings before the chocolate sets. That’s it! You’re all done!
How to see the magic:
Place your cocoa bomb into a mug and pour over hot water or hot milk to melt the bomb. Stir and watch the marshmallows pop right to the top! Keep stirring to let the chocolate fully melt, and enjoy!
I hope this helps as you create a batch of hot cocoa bombs :).
