It’s getting down to the wire when it comes to the next holiday this year, and it’s my favorite one! I know Halloween will most definitely look different because of Covid, but I know we can all still find ways to celebrate and make it special… including a batch of darling Halloween cupcakes!

I’ve put together four different ideas that would be perfect for your Halloween gatherings this year. I tried to cover a few of my favorite classic spooky & not-so-spooky themes – ghosts, spiderwebs, pumpkins, and candy corns!

Each of these cupcakes can be made with my white cake recipe with my vanilla bean buttercream. You can always add in any gel coloring to make them any color to match! I also loved matching my cupcakes to their matching sprinkles and colorful cupcake liners. The sprinkles you see in this post are from either NeonYolk, Man vs Cakes, or my own creation using individual sprinkle packets.

Spooky Ghost cupcakes:

Making these cute little cupcakes is pretty easy! They’re not-so-spooky, but come together in less than a minute!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Marshmallow (not the mini’s, but the ones commonly used for s’mores).
  • Fondant (you can use store-bought. It’s easier, and you won’t need too much of it per cupcake).
  • Circle cutter, or bottom of a wide/large mug/glass.
  • Toothpick – one per cupcake. Make sure to tell your guests that there is one in there! You can always remove it if there’s enough frosting for it to stick.
  • Edible Marker (ALWAYS use edible markers on your food – never use a Sharpie or something toxic… That’s a pretty rookie mistake ;).
  • Cupcake, frosting, and sprinkles!
  • Styrofoam plate or something to stick the toothpicks into.

HOW TO make them:

  1. Stick the toothpick into the bottom of the marshmallow. You’ll need one toothpick + marshmallow set per cupcake. Set aside.
  2. Roll out a large piece of fondant to a pretty thin layer. Use a circle cutter to make a circle for each cupcake. Roll out each circle a little more.
  3. Add a small touch of water to the top of the marshmallow (I just got my finger wet and rubbed the tip), then drape the fondant circle over the marshmallow.
  4. Add on two little eyeballs with the edible marker. Place the ghosts aside (I stuck mine to the bottom of a styrofoam plate upside down) to harden.
  5. Pipe on the buttercream and roll the cupcakes in sprinkles on the sides.
  6. Place on one ghost per cupcake.

WHITE & PINK PUMPKIN PATCH CUPCAKES

These turned out so fun! I have white pumpkins on our porch and knew I wanted to add fondant ones to these cupcakes to match! However, when I finished and photographed them, they look exactly like EYEBALLS! Whaaaat? I know, Instagram had a party over that one. haha. As for these ones, you’ll need a couple easy things to put them together:

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • White Fondant. You can do any color, really. I just chose pink for these little guys!
  • Toothpick
  • Stems – can be sprinkles, pretzels, candy, licorice, anything! I used circle sprinkles from the sprinkle mix here.
  • Wilton 104 pedal piping tip for the ruffles and Soft Pink gel coloring.
  • Cupcakes, frosting, and sprinkles.

How to make them:

  1. Roll the fondant into small spheres the size of a large grape. After they are circles, using your toothpick, add ridges around the outside of the circle. Press a sprinkle in the center to create the stem. Set aside.
  2. Pipe on some buttercream and roll the entire cupcake top in sprinkles.
  3. Next, pipe on the pink buttercream ruffles using your pedal tip in the center on top.
  4. Add on the white pumpkin, and you’re all ready to go!

Fuzzy Spiderweb Cupcakes

These turned out sooooooo cute and have my heart! I’ve made cakes before with spiderwebs, but making them “fuzzy” makes everything even more fun!

Here’s what you’ll need:

How to make them:

  1. Lay out parchment paper in your work space.
  2. Melt black candy chocolate melts in the microwave for about 45 seconds and stir until thoroughly melted.
  3. Carefully add the melted chocolate to a piping bag either with or without the small piping tip. If you aren’t using a tiny piping tip, snip off a very small part of the tip of the piping bag.
  4. Pipe on a spiderweb shape that will fit on your cupcake. Make as many as you’ll need for the number of your cupcakes.
  5. Immediately add on the sprinkle sugar. Let dry for 10 minutes.
  6. Pipe on a rosette onto your cupcake, roll the sides in sprinkles, and add on a fuzzy spiderweb on top of each cupcake.

CANDY CORN CUPCAKES

I know candy corn can be a little polarizing – you either love them or you….well… want to throw the entire bag into the garbage! These, however, have candy corns on them… but they’re fondant! Super easy to make, and make a cute statement piece for your Halloween treat table.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • Fondant – split into three small sections and dye one of the sections yellow and one of them orange.
  • Parchment paper.
  • Rolling pin.
  • Pizza cutter.
  • White, orange, and yellow nonpareil sprinkles.
  • Cupcakes & buttercream.

HOW TO MAKE THEM:

  1. Roll out the three fondant sections into logs. Roll logs together in a long strip using the rolling pin. I did the yellow, orange, white pattern to match the candy corn pattern.
  2. Using your pizza cutter or rolling cutter on the parchment paper, cut triangles at an angle into the strip. Half of them will be the right way, then every other one will be backwards (with the white on the bottom, haha).
  3. Frost the cupcake and add on the candy corns, then sprinkle on the nonpareils.
