Witch’s Cauldron Cupcakes
It would be a huge understatement if I talked about how fun these were to make, because they were BEYOND fun to create and decorate! Look at these fun cupcakes, you guys! Creating fun cupcakes for Halloween is something I absolutely love doing. When I was thinking of what to create this year, I wanted to echo a new technique I’ve been trying out on my cakes: 3D Candy Melt Spheres. I created a wicked fun witch’s cauldron cake, and to echo the fun decorations I put on top of those, I created these fun cupcakes to go along with it.
With a black witch’s cauldron base, black buttercream cauldron rim, green buttercream witch’s brew, little drips of green candy melts, and everything “bubbling” out of the top of them, these cupcakes will be an instant hit at your Halloween party. And better yet – they come together very quickly, and with plenty of ease to keep the process fun while doing so. Let’s dive right into the Halloween fun!
- For the base of the cake, I used my Dark Chocolate Cake recipe base, and then added a bit of black food coloring to the already dark cake batter. A little goes a long way, so go easy. I loved using these thick pleated cupcake liners (found them at Michael’s Arts & Craft Store). They baked up beautifully dark and served as a perfect base for the “cauldron” portion of the cupcake.
- Next, I piped on a rim of my black buttercream (dark chocolate buttercream with a touch of black food coloring gel) to serve as the “rim” of the cauldrons.
- I wanted there to be something easy to act as glue for all the decorative elements on top of the cupcakes, so I used a bit of green buttercream in the center. Easy peasy.
- Next, for the “ooze” on the side of the buttercream, I used 1 cup of Green Wilton Candy Melts +3 Tablespoons of heavy cream and microwaved the glass bowl they were in for about 30 seconds, then stirred until it was nice and smooth. I poured it into a ganache drip bottle and then gently let it ooze down the sides.
- For the toppers, I used candy melt spheres (directions below for these), bones sprinkles, eyeball sprinkles, and Wilton bubble sprinkles from their Halloween collection.

How to make chocolate spheres:
- Green Wilton Chocolate Candy Melts
- Small half-circle silicone mold
- Cake scraper
- Small Saucepan
- Melt candy melts in a microwave for 30-40 seconds and stir until there are no lumps.
- Using a teaspoon, scoop in about a teaspoon of melted chocolate into each of the candy melt molds, making sure to lift the chocolate up the sides of the half circles. Repeat until all the circles have been filled.
- Take a cake scraper and pull it across the circles to make them all flat on top.
- Let sit for 20-30 minutes at room temperature, or place in the freezer for 10 minutes. Pop the half circles out of the molds.
- Heat up a small saucepan over medium heat until very warm. Working two at a time with one half circle in each hand, place the open circle down on the warm pan and then gently press the two half circles together to stick, wiping away any excess chocolate drip with your fingers. Let dry. Repeat with remaining circles.
- To stick them together, place an entire circle in the pan for less than a second, then press the melted portion of the whole circle onto another circle. Add to your cupcakes.
