Cupcake Cones
All the pink and sprinkle feels with my darling cupcake cones (using this fun Cupcake Cone Baking Rack!) – the perfect way to steal the dessert table show at your upcoming birthday party! With cake baked right into the cone, the cone dunked into white chocolate and then rolled in sprinkles, topped with vanilla buttercream, and then topped with a fun pink shiny gumball, what’s there not to adore about these darling cupcake cones?
As a Mom of little boys, I feel like their requests for pink and sprinkley cupcakes are pretty far between for their birthdays. So when Wilton reached out to me to create something fun to celebrate a birthday with, I jumped right on the opportunity to try something fun and new in the kitchen.
I searched through all their fun ideas on their website on their fun Birthday Page, and immediately found their Cupcake Cone Baking Rack. It reminded me of one week in October when I was a little girl. My Grandma June was in town for a while to babysit me and my siblings while my parents went to Hawaii (at the time I thought they were being mean to leave us all behind, but as a Mom these days, I feel their need to have a bit of an escape with just the two of them!). My Grandma June wanted to bake us something special for Halloween, so she baked cake batter RIGHT inside some ice cream cones! I thought she was a magician. I watched as she carefully filled each cone (the flat kind), and placed them even more carefully on a cookie sheet to bake. The world seemed to stop as she slowly walked the wobbly cake-filled cones over to the oven to bake. She carefully placed them in the oven, and told me I could watch them bake if I wanted to. I sat in front of the oven and watched in amazement while they began to rise, and bake beautifully. I got so excited to see them up close, that when my Grandma June wasn’t looking, I swung open the oven and quickly shut it. Well, I didn’t shut it soft enough, and when the oven smacked closed, half of the Halloween cake cones toppled right over, and Grandma came running.
As you can probably guess, she wasn’t too happy about it.
But as sweet as most Grandma’s are, she quickly forgave me, and let me help frost the not-so-perfect with extra frosting and sprinkles to hide the imperfections.
If only Grandma June had seen this sweet cake-cone-baking contraption!!!
I’ve never seen one of these Cupcake Cone Baking Racks before, and I knew immediately I needed to give it a try. Also with something pink. Pink is always a good idea. 😉
It was simple enough to use. I placed the cupcake cone rack on a cookie sheet, filled each cupcake about halfway full with cake batter, and then baked them in the oven with the oven rack on the lowest height.
The baking rack made it super easy to not have anything wobbling around, and especially making it pretty easy for nothing to tip over. I baked them right up, removed them from the oven, and then let them cool to room temperature. DO NOT store these in the fridge, freezer, or even in a sealed container in the pantry. I learned through 3 separate batches that the soft cake inside the cones quickly turn the cones soft if stored in these three ways. If you’re making them, I would bake & frost them the day of, and then let them sit out at room temperature uncovered (with the AC on, of course! Need to mind that buttercream!).
I added about 3-4 Tablespoons (2 small cookie scoop’s worth) of batter, and they finished baking in less than 10 minutes.
To get those sprinkles to stick on the cone, I dunked each cone into light pink Wilton Candy Melts, and then into these darling sprinkles. Go easy on the melts and sprinkles… you don’t want them gooping all over the place, haha.
I let them set completely, then I added a swirl of vanilla buttercream (using the Wilton 1M tip), and topped them all off with a shiny gumball. Aren’t they just the cutest?! Seriously, I would die to have these at my birthday!
What I loved about these most, is with the use of the wire Cupcake Cone Baking Rack, I could use the cute sugar cones, and I didn’t have to worry about them tipping over while baking, dunking, decorating, and frosting them. It’s a win-win for this baking lady!
You can use your favorite white cake and vanilla cupcake recipe for these cupcakes, just know that you’ll have lots of cake batter leftover for cupcakes, or maybe even 2 6″ rounds worth left to use. More the merrier for a birthday party, eh?
Here’s a quick video going over the easy process:

So cute! But I hate fussing with chocolate or candy melts. I think I’ll just pipe some buttercream around edge and dip in sprinkles instead. Thanks for posting!
Hi Michelle! These are actually pretty easy – you just melted my hands full of candy melts in a glass dish in the microwave for 30 seconds and stir. Frosting would work well too! But I feel like part of the fun is having that chocolate candy shell. ☺️
I love this idea … they are beautiful but I do not work with candy melt … I always burn them, I do not know how to melt them. Do you have a video that can see it? Thank you very much, may God continue to bless your talent.
Hi Michelle! Melt then in a glass dish in the microwave. Start with 30 seconds, stir, then add another 10 seconds until you have a good consistency. Over microwaving them ruins them 👍🏻.
These are amazing for bridal showers im tots making these!
Totally! 🙌🏻
Hi L – totally!
This is such a great idea! And they are so beautiful as is all your work. By chance would you happen to have a picture of the cake baked in the cone prior to dipping in the chocolate that you could post?
Hi Mrs. ATB – Thank you so much! Unfortunately, I didn’t take any process pictures. I was leaving that up to the video. And the my phone didn’t record the part of the video that shows the cake baked inside the cupcake. It looks as you would imagine, though – just like the top of a cupcake out of an ice cream cone.
With thanks! Valuable information!
Thanks Toni!
Where do you get the gumballs
Hi Toni! From Zurchers!
I need to make more than 12 (like 36). What can I put these in to transport them?
Hi Toni! I have no idea. You may have to get creative 😉 .
What about transporting I’m cups?
I’ve never tried to transport them before, so I’m not sure.
I’d love to add these to my desert table menu, but how do I give them to the client?! If I’m doing the table myself, I suppose I can just ice them when I get there, but if the client is collecting them, how can I hand them over without creating a mess? It’d be awesome of Wilton created a special box for these beauties! 😍
Love your blog, Instagram, and can’t WAIT for the book!
Xoxo
Hi Myisha! I wish I knew how to store these for selling, but I seriously have no idea. haha
Hi there
I’m wondering if you have the actual recipe for these adorable ice cream cupcakes. Please
Rachelle
Hi Rachelle! I don’t – but you can certainly use my White Cake recipe with Vanilla Buttercream.
Hi this is such a beautiful and creative idea. What temperature did you bake them at? I was wondering if you had the recipe for the buttenrcake frosting? Thank you.
Hi Marianna! Thank you! I bake them at 325. The Vanilla Buttercream is with my White Cake Recipe.
I am impressed with this site, real I am a big fan .
Thanks Misty!
Hello I would like to know how can I store them if I need to transport them.
Hi Christine, I wish I knew! I’ve never transported them before.
Hi Mandy,
These look very tasty!
May I ask if you can freeze it?
Greetings Margriet
Hi Margriet, I’ve never tried, so I can’t say.
Hi Mandy,
Where did you get these adorable sprinkles?
